A dugong glides over seagrass in clear shallow water off Alor

Alor — 8 days

Alor

Alor is where Indonesia stops performing. Villages still weave on backstrap looms, the straits run cold and fast enough to keep the reefs pristine, and in the bay at Kabola a resident dugong has been greeting swimmers for decades. We sail it slowly, in the season when the water clears.

Moments

What stays with you.

A swimmer at first light in clear shallow water

The dugong of Kabola

Slip in quietly at first light and wait. When he comes, he comes close — a two-tonne animal with the calm of an old monk, grazing the seagrass an arm's length away.

Rows of handwoven ikat cloth in deep reds and indigo

Looms in the hills

In Takpala and the villages above the bay, ikat is still dyed with indigo and morinda root and tied thread by thread. You sit on the floor, you watch, you are handed the shuttle.

Reefs in the current

The Pantar Strait pulls cold, nutrient-rich water up from the deep. Soft coral walls, schooling fish thick enough to dim the light, and nobody else on the site.
